Pay close attention to what you don't want in the picture! Remove distracting elements - reposition yourself,zoom in, etc. Spend more time focused on what you don't want in the picture, than what you do want in the picture.
When we look at something that looks cool and simply shoot it, we don't see the telephone wires, reflections, goofballs in the background, etc. Yet, when printed they often become the focus of the print or at least become a major distraction. Don't let it happen! Look at everything in the viewfinder. For second or so, ignore what you want the viewer to see and see if there's something else competing for visual attention. Then remove it!
